I’ve done the drive between Linville, NC and the mid-Atlantic region with my family countless times, and I find it interesting that we all have our own unique landmarks that we first noticed, then went on to seek out, year after year.
It is my sister who photographed the sign pictured here, a sign whose referent has over the years piqued in her a kind of passive curiousity- a sign and place that I was not aware of until today- the day I created this blog.
“Why not look into the history of Chilhowie and see if I can find anything weird,” I thought.
I googled “Chilhowie” and found some interesting tidbits which I will dramatically condense for your reading convenience here:
- chilhowie was often a starting point for hunting expeditions in the 1700s
- tornadoes hit chilhowie repeatedly in the last 5 years and many in the town have been quoted as having felt “forgotten”
- Andrew “nick” cullop, an mlb pitcher between 1913 and 1921, hails from chilhowie
- The climate in this area has mild differences between highs and lows, and there is adequate rainfall year-round
